Last Update

2007 - August 29
Livorno, Italy - docked

Crew drill at 10am limited our time, we would have liked to have
gone into Florence but we were worried about how much time we
would have to get back to the ship in time. Instead we walked
around Livorno - found an Internet place and had a slice of pizza.
Came back early because the town went on siesta so
everything was closed up. The rest of the day just rested and
had a relaxing day.

Shops open 9p - 11p.

Today is one of our manager's (Karen) last day. Went to
crew bar afterward to say farewell.

2007 - August 30
Monte Carlo, Monaco

Docked today. We had IPM. We were able to trade one card
so Diane went in and walked along the coast just a little way to
see how to get to the open-air cinema so we could find it at night.
More just relaxing - next week is going to be a busy week. Lot
of ports plus lots of hours of work.
Shops closed due overnight in Monte Carlo.

2007 - August 31

Still in Monte Carlo. What a great day. We got up early and
took the train to Nice. It's always fun to do the local experiences on
our own - not on a tour. Once in Nice walked around the beautiful
open air markets selling flowers, fish, paintings and fruit.
Bought a small basket of raspberries and enjoyed those while
we walked around. Went to the Plaza Medicina where there
was a beautiful fountain. The summer has been so hot we
were dressed for warm but the day was quite cool. We walked
along the Cote d'Azur beaches and just about froze. Had
lunch at Miko's Kebab's in a cute shopping area, did a
little souvenir shopping then grabbed the train home. After
arriving back in Monte Carlo walked up the Prince Albert's
Palace. It had warmed up by then and was a perfect day.
Took lots of pictures and enjoyed walking around upper
Monaco. Went back to the ship and changed to go to the
outdoor "Monaco Open-Air Theatre" where we saw
"Die Hard 4.0". How fun sitting under the walls of the palace.
Then walked around the harbor and looked at the yachts again.
They continue to amaze us. Then we ran into some other crew
at "Stars and Bars" having a light night snack so sat with
them for a while. It was just about as perfect a day can be.
Shops closed due still docked in Monte Carlo.

2007 - September 1

Woke up in Monte Carlo. Slept late due we didn't get home
until about 3am last night. Just had a restful day on the ship.
Shops 5p - 11p.

2007 - September 2
Docked at Civitavecchia, Italy

Both escorted a transfer only tour into Rome. The only responsibility
it just to make sure everyone is back on the bus at the end of the day.
We took a tour of the Colosseum which was very interesting. Then
walked to Piazza Venezia which is the center of Rome. There was
a military museum we walked through. Didn't stay for too long though
because all of the descriptions were in Italian. (Many of the museums
we go to have descriptions in many languages). We paid way too
much for a bad lunch at a restaurant with an attitude. (A coke cost
€5 or about $6.85 - ouch.) While Italy has many beautiful museums,
monuments and ruins the people are rude. You can't walk anywhere
without them cutting you off or pushing past you. There is graffiti and
trash everywhere. We observed someone wash their hands and feet
in a fountain and then throw paper towels down on the ground -
a trash can was 2 feet away. He was definitely Italian and not a
tourist. While on the graffiti covered train, jam-packed with
hygiene challenged Italians someone stole a little purse out of
Diane's bag. All they got was $15 - but never the less it was
very upsetting!!!! It's been interesting seeing the sights but
we don't feel as if we need to come back and visit again soon.
Ship sailed at 9p. Shops open 9p - 11p.

2007 - September 3
Day at Sea

Shops open 9a - 9p.

2007 - September 4
Anchored in Sorrento, Italy

Both Diane and Paul escorted Pompeii plus lunch on the
Amalfi Coast. Every time you see Pompeii it looks
different. The clouds were so low on the mountains you
couldn't actually see Mt. Vesuvius. Then took a scenic,
hilly, windy, ride to the Amalfi coast for lunch at
Il Saraceno. Great hotel built into the hillside with
stunning views.
Shops open 6p - 11p.
Set clocks back 1 hour tonight due time change. :-(

2007 - September 5
Day at Sea

Shops 9am - 9pm

2007 - September 6
Anchored off Santorini, Greece

IPM today so stayed on board.
The beautiful white houses of Santorini never cease to amaze.
Shops open 5p - 11p.

2007 - September 7
Anchored off Navplion, Greece

Diane escorted a tour to the Corinth Canal and Ancient
Corinth. The canal was built to save considerable time for
vessels instead of sailing from the Peloponnesian Peninsula.
The canal is 26 feet deep, 70 feet wide and has sloping sides
that reach 170 feet. It connects the saronic and Corinthian
Gulfs. Then on to the beautiful ruins at Ancient Corinth.
Afterwards had lunch at Hotel Loutraki with beautiful
views of the Corinthian Gulf.
Paul escorted a tour of Palamidi Fortress. It was an easy
1/2 day tour he enjoyed.
Shops open 5p - 11p.

2007 - September 8
Full Day in the Mediterranean Sea.

Shops open 9am - 9pm

2007 - September 9
Docked in Corfu, Greece

This may come as a surprise but we've made a decision to go
home to the USA. We have some things we need to look into
at home. We'll finish this voyage but then we'll be leaving.
Spent the day on the ship attending to our plans.
Shops open 5p - 11p.
We gain back an hour tonight. :-)

2007 - September 10
Docked in Dubrovnik, Croatia

Spent a lot of time on the Internet doing research for going
home. Enjoyed spending time on deck just looking at the
beautiful scenery.
Shops open 5p - 11p.

2007 - September 11
Shops opened at 9am until we docked in Venice at about 11am.

Took the Water shuttle in to San Marco Square and just
started walking all the back streets of Venice. Bought pizza
for lunch (again). Paul - traditional margherita, Diane - greek.
A little more souvenir shopping. Came across some unique
churches - not as grand as San Marco Basilica but still
amazing. It also seemed that there were Piazzas around
every corner. The trick to finding your way through Venice
is to find the bridges. Had the best time and just walked
back to the ship. Then did some packing and paperwork.
At night took the water shuttle in again for our last experience.
What a great place to end this journey.

2007 - September 12

Up at 3am to finish packing and catch taxi for a flight
leaving Venice at 6:40am. First leg was an 1 1/2 hour
flight to Frankfurt. Then 8 hours to Washington Dulles -
Welcome Back to the USA. After a 4 hour layover our
last flight to Phoenix was uneventful. Our friends
Lisa and Dale were waiting for us in Phoenix for the
final leg.

Don't be sad as your journey
comes to an end,
be happy for where you've been
and what you've seen.
Only look forward to the future.

More and More Med

2007, August 22
Dubrovnik, Croatia

Docked today. Diane took an early shuttle bus into Dubrovnik
to "walk the wall" of Dubrovnik that Paul had done previously.
Not for people with a fear of heights. It was very interesting
seeing Dubrovnik and the area from a different perspective.
Paul stayed back and went to the crewman center to use
the Internet and make phone calls.

Sailed at 6pm, shops open 6p - 11p.
Immediately after work caught the end of a Hector Olivera
performance in the Galaxy Lounge. He is an absolute artist
performing on the organ. At midnight there was a crew movie
in the Hollywood Theatre - "Blades of Glory".
Fun to watch with fellow crew.

2007, August 23
Day at Sea

Shops open from 9am - 9pm.
Some excitement during the day. They saw a small lifeboat
capsized near our ship. They sent a boat out to investigate it.
No indications as to how it got there. After work went to see
comedian Yakov Smirnoff in the Stardust Lounge. Still very
funny. Then walked around Deck 13 to look at the moon and
the sea, then to the crew bar for a few a little while and just
talked with some friends.

2007, August 24
Taormina, Italy

Anchored off the port of Naxos-Gardenia. We have
In-Port Manning today so cannot get off the ship.
Slept very late, worked out some, household chores.
Shops open 5p - 11pm.

VENETIAN MASQUERADE PARTY at Stardust
Lounge for crew. Lots of fun just talking with
everyone. We couldn't wear masks because of our
glasses - Diane went with a fan, Paul didn't need one!
Ha-Ha!.

2007, August 25
HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAUL!
Sorrento, Italy

A full day off - slept late again. What a great place to spend
a birthday. Tendered into town and had a great Italian lunch at
Ristorante Don Vincenzo, dined al fresco and watched the
people. Paul had lasagna, Diane - salad and 4 cheese pasta.
The salad is served only with olive oil and balsamic vinegar - perfect.
The bread all has a hint of anisette. The meal was followed with
lemon cillo and some cream liqueur. Neither were to our tastes.
Birthday's are posted on crew boards so everyone, even people
we barely know, have been wishing Paul a happy birthday.
Very hot today 35 Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) not Phoenix hot but
still decided to come back and enjoy the air-conditioning and
just relax. Because of the heat it wa so hazy you couldn't even
see Mt. Vesuvius. Shoppie girls (sorry Kamal) dropped a
birthday care package for Paul - "for the man who has
everything". As we were going back ashore ran into some
crew we know going to dinner so joined them after making
some phone calls. It was a great night. We ended up with
shoppies, photogs, entertainers, bar and restaurant waitresses,
art gallery managers, casino people, trunk show concessionaires
and land-based managers. There were people from the U.S.,
England, Scotland, South Africa, Romania, India, Australia,
and Canada. Part of the fun of life on board.
Shops closed - Overnight in Sorrento.

2007, August 26
Sorrento, Italy

Worked in Men's Apropos changing over stock in the morning.
Training from 2P - 4:30p. Then shops open 5P - 11p.
Our area manager from Bristol, England was onboard so a
spent some time after the shops closed making some changes.

2007, August 27
Day At Sea

Area manager still on-board so still making changes and
adapting to different merchandising.
Shops open 9am - 9pm.
More changes made after closing.

2007, August 28
Civitavecchia, Italy

Docked today. We intended to take the train into Rome but
just didn't have the drive. Worked in the stock-room for
a little while, went into town to a crew internet/phone place.
Walked down and went to the beach.
Shops open 9p - 11p.

More Mediterranean

2007 - August 17
Day at Sea

A bit of information regarding the Mediterranean.
It is constantly changing due to the movement of the European,
African, and Asian continents. It actually encompasses the
Aegean Sea, Ionian Sea, Adriatic Sea, Tyrrhenian Sea, the
Sea of Crete, the Sea of Marmara, the Alboran Sea, the
Balearic Sea and the Ligurian Sea.
Shops open 9am - 9pm

2007 - August 18

Happy Birthday Dad!!!!!!

Venice, Italy

Got up at 5am to watch the ship sail into Venice. It actually
goes through part of the largest canal. It was a very fun
experience. Afterward we docked we received a delivery so
spent the day in the stockroom (deck 3) checking in the new
stores. Worked until about 7pm. Afterward, we took the
water-taxi into St. Mark's Square just to walk around (and grab
a slice of pizza). It's such a pretty city at night.
Shops closed due in-port overnight.

2007 - August 19
Still in Venice.

Worked for a few hours in the store room
organizing after yesterday's delivery. Then starting at 11:45am
until 3:30pm did "embark's". As new guests embark onto the
ship we escort them to lunch or room. Then took the ferry
shuttle back into Venice. Had a fantastic day just walking
around. Came across a nice park, a tree-lined
pedestrian lane, beautiful monuments, interesting art,
Campo d'Arsenal, more gondolas, bought some gelato,
listened to the church bells, plus did some souvenir shopping.
Shops closed due in port all day (yeah!).

2007 - August 20
Woke up in Venice again.

Worked all morning in the stock
room and shops still organizing and bringing out new stock
from the delivery. Guest drill at 1:15pm and then shops opened
at 2p - 9p. After work went saw "Waitress" in the Hollywood Theatre.

2007 - August 21
Sea Day

Shops open 9am - 9pm.
Diane went to see the "Million Dollar Musical" with Kay.

More Mediterranean

2007 - August 10
Portofino, Italy

IPM today. Enjoyed a quiet day on-board ship.
Sailed at 5p. Shops open 5p - 11p.

2007 - August 11
Livorno, Italy

Docked in Livorno which is an industrial port.
Diane escorted a tour to Medieval Lucca and Historic Pisa.
Lucca has over 88 churches which the tour went to every one.
Not really. It was a beautiful town though with historic city
walls built in medieval times and reconstructed in the
16th century. All for protection from the Venetians and the
Pisians. Today the walls a a beautiful tree-lined park.
It also included a typical Tuscan lunch at bucadisanantonio.
Afterward a short bus-ride to Pisa for a visit to the Duomo,
Bapistry and Leaning Tower of Pisa. The foundation of the
Tower shifted during construction in the 12th century,
- devastating architect Bonanno Pisano. Little did he know
that the Tower would become internationally famous.
Paul did not have a tour today so he went into Livorno and
walked around a little.

2007 - August 12
At Sea

Typical sea day
Shops open 9am - 9p

2007 - August 13
Sorrento, Italy

Anchored off Sorrento. More tour escorting today.
Diane escorted "Snorkeling the Protected Bay Or Ieranto".
The Bay Of Ieranto is protected by the National Trust for Italy.
The Bay can only be reached by boat. Snorkeling wise there
wasn't much to see. The snorkel guide did find a couple
different star-fish, a sea cucumber, and a spiny urchin, also saw
some jelly-fish. It was a lot of fun to go swimming in the
Mediterranean Sea. It was so cold and very salty. Also took a
path to an old church where there some great views.
Paul escorted "Deluxe Discovery of Amalfi and Positano".
Same tour as Diane did last time in Sorrento.
Shops open 6p - 11p

2007 - August 14
Taormina, Italy (Sicily)

Anchored of the port of Giaridini Naxos. More tours.
Diane escorted "Panoramas of Castelmola & Taormina".
Part of the fun of this tour was the bus ride to Castelmola.
The streets are so narrow the bus driver has to back down
the steep, narrow streets. After a walk around Castelmola
transferred to Taormina where we toured the Greek Theatre
then a very nice lunch at Grand Hotel Timeo.
Everything in Sicily is "piano, piano" - slowly, slowly.
They don't like to get upset about anything - they have a very
laid back lifestyle.

Paul escorted the Silician Cooking and Gardening Tour.
He visited a typical Tuscan Villa right out of the movie
"Tuscan Sun". At the villa they had a typical Silician garden
with fruit trees, olive trees, fig trees, plus other seasonal
vegetables. Afterwards attended a 2 hour cooking class
where Paul helped to prepare a Sicilian lunch.

Shops open 5p - 11p.

2007 - August 15
Corfu, Greece

Docked off Corfu Town. Paul escorted the
"Achilleion Palace & Old Corfu Town". The palace has
beautiful gardens and a fantastic view of the Ioanian Sea.
Then a short walk through the narrow lanes and beautiful
mansions of Corfu's Old Town

Diane escorted the "Corfu Adventure by 4x4".
Paul did this tour before. The road we took boasts 27
hairpin turns, leading from the east side to the north side
of the island. Then onto the west side for a quick snack
at the Golden Fox restaurant.

Shops open 5p - 11p.

2007 - August 16
Dubrovnik, Croatia

Docked today. Crew drill at 10am. IPM today but
switched cards with Kate and Ruschda so went in to
seaman's center to use the internet and phones. Also
went to the grocery store - a crew member luxury.
Shops open 5p - 11p.

Til we write again............

Idyllic Italy

2007 - August 1
Sorrento, Italy

Diane escorted a tour
"Amalfi & Positano: A Deluxe Discovery". It was really
nice. First a beautiful drive down the Amalfi Coast with it's
jagged cliffs. Then free time exploring Amalfi town which is
more of a small Italian village. Afterward she was treated to
a gourmet lunch at Le Sirenuse. It included pasta with shrimp
and fillet of sea bream with aubergines. Then more time to
explore Positano which is another Italian village. Very
charming and interesting.

Paul escorted a tour
"Positano & Don Alfonso Wine Cellars". He crossed
paths with Diane in Positano for a quick photo-op.
Then to the Wine Cellars which were fascinating because
the vaults that were built between the 16th and 18th
centuries descend vertically. Paul then enjoyed a sample
of wine, olive oil and local snacks.
Ship sailed at 12 midnight. Shops closed.
Crew party at night on Deck 5 Aft.
Live Band Night - Engine Room Band and
Abandon Ship (A-Band-On Ship).

2007 - August 2
Sea Day

Shops open 9am - 9pm.
After work at 10pm, the fitness instructor Alwyn
had a "circuit class". We decided to go to kick-off a new
habit of exercise. The only crew to go were just 5 of
us shoppies. Boy did he give us a work-out! More on
how we feel about this tomorrow.

2007 - August 3
Cannes France

Anchored today. Took tender in at about 10am. Spent a
leisurely day walking around, we are so sore from yesterday.
Looked at all the expensive stores. Bought a take-away lunch
from a local stand and found some chairs to just sit and
people watch on a strand at the beach.
We found a movie theatre and saw the latest
"Harry Potter" movie which was in English with french
subtitles. It was nice to do something "normal".
Shops closed all day since overnighting in Cannes.
Went back into Cannes during the evening to walk around
and enjoy the lights and ambience of local street artists.

2007 - August 4
Cannes, France

Ship had anchored overnight. Today we were IPM (in-port
manning) so had to stay on-board. Got caught up on a few
things. Went to the crew gym for some cardio work.
Shops open 5p-11p. Then went to the gym again to continue
with weight machines. On the way saw the most unbelieveable
moonrise. Probably about 3/4 moon which was huge and
dark red.

2007 - August 5
Livorno, Italy

Caught a bus from Livorno to Pisa to see the Leaning Tower.
Ran into a couple of other people from the ship - Kay, a fellow
shoppie and Luke, a gentleman ambassador host, went all
together. Bus ride was a lot of fun. Very local. Went by many
beach clubs where locals go to have fun. It was a Sunday
so everyone was at the beach. It reminded us a lot of the
beach areas near North Wildwood, New Jersey. In addition
to the Leaning Tower their was Duomo which is the cathedral
and there was also the Baptistry. The Leaning Tower was
originally built as the bell-tower for the Duomo. We were on
a strict timeline so didn't stay for long but everything was so
interesting. Grabbed a ham and cheese pizza/sandwich
from Bar Roma in Pisa on the way back. Caught the bus,
- then back to work.
Shops open 9p - 11p.

2007 - August 6
Portofino, Italy

The next to last time we visit. It always feels like home since
it looks like the hotel at Universal. Climbed the cliffs to
Castello Brown and lighthouse above the harbor. Met an
interesting young couple from Hungary and had a nice talk
with them by the lighthouse. All the views and the water
were unbelieveable. The town is so pretty it almost
doesn't seem real. Was sad to leave. Some big yachts
were in the harbor (see pictures). One of the yachts
"Halcyon Days" we've seen in other ports of call.
Went back to ship and saw the movie "Zodiac" in the
Hollywood Theatre.
Shops open 5p - 11p.

Then to the gym for a quick work-out. Leaving the gym we
saw a Princess Cruises ship sailing the other way -
literally - 2 ships passing in the night.

2007 - August 7
Civitavecchia, Italy
(That's pronounced chi-va-ta-vekkia.)

A day on our own. We got off the ship at about 8am. It was
just a short walk to the train station to catch a train headed to
Rome. The ride was about 1 hour. Got off at the Roma San
Pietro stop which is right by Vatican City. We knew there
was going to be a long line for the Vatican Museum and the
Sistine Chapel but it was so much longer than we expected.
At least 2 1/2 hours. After about an hour wait we gave up and
went to the front of the line, said we lost the group we were
escorting and could we get in right away. The guard said OK.
We saved ourselves a lot of time. Another big surprise was the
vastness of the museum. You couldn't do it in a full day much
less a few hours - but we just blew through as fast as we could.
One of the best parts was an exhibit of Egyptian artifacts.
Every single room we entered was awesome. The Sistine
Chapel was completely packed with people. It was interesting
how so much of the paintings included a lot of blue. While the
Sistine Chapel was amazing we enjoyed other parts of the
museum better.

Found a quick slice of pizza and a coke then off to
St. Peter's Basilica. The sheer size was amazing. It really
made us feel small. The statues, arches, doors, paintings,
ceilings, everything were absolutely grand. It takes quite a
while just to wander into all the different alcoves.
Finally we had to go to catch the train back to Civitavecchia.
After getting back to the ship went back in to town to do
e-mails and phone calls (a lot cheaper than on the ship).
Got back to the ship again just in time for the guest safety
drill and then work 9p - 11p.

2007 - August 8
Day At Sea

Shops open 9am - 9pm
Went and worked out again after work. Then fellow shoppie
Kamal turned 30 at midnight so met everyone in the crew bar
for a celebration. Had a fun time hanging out with the group.
Left by 12:30a because had an early day tomorrow.

2007 - August 9
Monte Carlo, Monaco

Where Monaco is the country, Monte Carlo is the only city.
The entire country of Monaco is 1/2 the size of Central Park
in NY City.

Started at 7:45am where Diane escorted the
"Private Cooking Lesson at Le Moulin de Mougins" tour.
After a scenic 1 hour bus ride past Nice arrived at Le Moulin
de Mougins. Moulin means mill. The restaurant so named
because of the olive mills to make oil. This was just a
demonstration - nothing hands on. The recipes demonstrated
were "Italian style risotto with lemon zest and fresh mint" and
"Chicken ballaton with olives past and thyme flavoured tomato
sauce". Both wonderful (of course) and appropriate for the
region. Then a nice drive back.

Also starting at 7:45am Paul escorted the "Eze and Nice"
tour. Diane had previously gone to Eze which is a very
quaint medieval village and also Nice which is really a
wonderful French city.

Both tours were nice because they were just 1/2 day
which gave us the rest of the day to explore on our own.
A fellow crew member told us to walk thru an auto
tunnel to get to an internet area. At the end of the tunnel we got
stopped by the local police. It turns out no one is allowed to go
thru the tunnel. He wanted to give us a ticket, but we talked him
out of it.

More Italy

2007, July 24

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Paul escorted the wall city of Dubrovnik tour. Paul had a small
group of 6 people. The walled city has a walk way that circles
the old city. It takes about 50 min to walk the wall of the city.
After they visited a maritime museum,
Diane escorted the "Scenic Off-Road Adventure" tour, if you
could call it escorting. Their were a total of 4 guests with 2
escorts, 2 guides, and 2 jeeps. Very interesting for Diane since
she rode with the main escort. The guide talked a lot about the
war which gave Croatia their independence in 1991. Still today,
people must stay on the main paths because there are
unexploded bomb shells all over the countryside. The guide also
talked about the difference in believes between the Catholic and
the Muslims which both live today in modern Croatia. The first
part of the tour went to Velji Do which was a scenic point very
near the Monte Negro border which also recently gained
independence. Then drove down and across the agricultural
area which is in the Konavle valley which included different
produce - peaches, apples, watermelons, pumpkins, other
squash, vineyards. Also sheep ranches and drove through the
river Ljuta, which runs through central Dubrovnik.
Other highlights included a stop at the freshwater spring of
Vodovadja where we skipped rocks and watched the turtles
run. Then up to the country estate Sapro where a delicious
traditional Croatian meal was served. Chicken and lamb seasoned
with rosemary cooked under steel covers with charcoal underneath
and on top. But to start fresh tomatoes and cucumber in olive oil
with a broth soup.
Also fantastic figs!!!

2007, July 25

Shops open 9am - 12N
Arrived Venice, Italy 12N

Delivery day. At first it was indicated to be around 1pm.
Then 2pm. Then 4pm. Finally after 5pm. In the meantime we
just sat around (and napped) and waited. Once we received
the delivery it was all work - lifting, moving, counting, checking,
pricing, and inventory. Worked very late, Shops closed
though since we were in port.

2007, July 26

Venice, Italy

After the delivery yesterday, spent the morning in the shops
putting out new stock. Then we had embarkation duty again
from 11:45am - 4:30pm. Embarkation includes welcoming
guests aboard and escorting them to either restaurants or
their rooms when available. Then walked around the pier area
(nothing exciting) and called home.
During the evening met the shoppies plus many others at the
O-Bar (Officers Bar). Afterwards went into Venice for dinner.
Venice at night. Unbelievable. Many musicians. All the
landmarks had such a different contrast than in the day.
Had pizza just on the other side of the Rialto Bridge.
Caught the last water shuttle back to the ship.

2007, July 27

Venice, Italy

In-Port Manning (IPM) Spent the day on board organizing the
shops and store-room, price changes. That sort of thing.
Ship sailed at 5pm. Shops open 5p - 11p.

2007, July 28

Day At Sea

Absolutely nothing different from normal.
Shops open 9am - 9pm
Afterwards went to Deck 13. The almost full moon on the calm
sea was beautiful. It was un-earthly.

2007, July 29

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Diane had a nice tour called "Cavtat Panoramas". Cavtat
is a little village founded centuries ago. It has a palm-lined
promenade with shops and bistros. Beautiful yachts were
in port. Diane walked up about 200 steps to the Racic
Mausoleum. From the dates on the tombs it's not more than
about 100 years old, but all the tombs are above-ground.
It was very beautiful and peaceful. Then a nice ride to
different "panoramas".

Paul took a much longer tour - Neretva River Delta Cruise.
He was able to go into Bosniz-Herzegovina which is one of
the bordering countries. The tour included lunch which you
can only get to by these old wooden boats that look like
the boat from the movie African Queen.
Shops then open 6pm to 11pm.

2007, July 30

Day at sea

Shops open 9am-9pm
Just relaxed after work.

2007, July 31

Taormina, Italy

Both Paul and Diane escorted the Mt Etna Off Road
Adventure tour. The tour included doing 4 wheeling over
old lava flows, walking through a underground lava tube,
taking a walk up volcanic ash hills, visiting a water gorge
area where locals go to swim and had lunch at this
Italian restaurant set in the wood. It was one of the
best excursions we have been on.
Shops then opened 6pm to 11pm.

Cities of Perfection

2007, July 16
Portofino, Italy

Serenity anchored off Portofino so tendered to shore. We each
had different tours today. Diane's was "Delightful Genoa & the
Delightful Riviera". (Both were delightful.) From Portofino
we were ferried to Santa Margherita where we caught our
bus. It took the scenic route which was beautiful. The streets
are so narrow the bus had to back up many times to let cars
pass the other direction. Arrived in Genoa which is mostly a
modern town. Much of it was destroyed in WWII when Genoa
sided with the Germans. What remains is either simple,
plain marble facades or opulent Baroque architecture.
One of the highlights was the San Lorenzo Cathedral
with black and white striped marble portals which is a
French Gothic style. (Took a lot of pictures).

The tour took us walking through picturesque streets.
We passed by the home of Christopher Columbus - just
from the bus, couldn't visit it. Visited the Palazzo Ducale
which is beautiful but is actually not marble but just stucco
and paint - they couldn't afford the marble. Had lunch at
Zoeffirino where Frank Sinatra, Liza Minelli and
Pope John Paul II had dined at regularly. Buon Apetito!
Then return to Santa Margherita and on to Portofino.
Paul toured "Scenic Drive to Rapallo and Sestri Levante".
Also leaving from Portofino to Santa Margherita took bus to
Sestri Levante which is a medieval beach resort town.
Free time to walk around and enjoy the sights. Then onto
Rapallo for a light Italian snack. A nice quiet day
enjoying the Italian Riviera with cliffs, coves, and beaches.

2007, July 17
Civitaveccia, Italy

Originally we were scheduled to get a delivery but due to
problems in customs it was cancelled. There was a crew
drill scheduled at 10:00am. After the drill it didn't really
seem like enough time to take the train into Rome and make
it back in time for work. Stayed in town. By the time we
took the shuttle (just a few minutes ride) into town the stores
were closed for Siesta. They wouldn't reopen until after 5pm.
Did find a good internet place which was only 2.5€ per hour
versus the $10/hr we pay on the ship. Enjoyed a quiet day
on the ship and a beautiful sunset at about 8:45pm. Shops
open from 9pm - 11pm.

2007, July 18
Sorrento, Italy

Anchored off the Piccola Marina in Sorrento so we were
tendered in. Both Paul and Diane escorted "The Excavations
of Pompeii". The city was well preserved after the eruption
of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD because the city was buried
beneath 30 feet of volcanic ash and cinder. There were
original casts formed from the tombs that were made by
bodies that were encased and incinerated. Eerie to
see their expressions. It was about 40 celcius today
which is about 104 fahrenheit. Hot day - but after all it
is summer. Shops open from 6PM to 11PM but had to
go in at 5PM to do "change overs" (changing the clothes
on the mannequins).

2007, July 19
Day At Sea

Shops open 9am - 9pm. No rest for the weary.

2007, July 20
Santorini, Greece

We were going to get going early and go into town.
There are about 6 ships in port so it was going to
be crowded. We woke up thinking it was 9am
but it tured out to be noon. Oh well, we stayed
on the ship and did laundry and layed out in the
sun.

Shops open 6pm to 11pm.

2007, July 21
Nafplion, Greece

We ended sleeping in until noon. All this
touring tires us out. We stayed on the ship
because we had IPM duties and the stores
were open 5pm to 11pm.

2007, July 22
At Sea

Stores open 9am to 9pm.

2007, July 23
Corfu, Greece

Paul escorted a 4x4 jeep tour with about 46 guests.
Went into the heart of Corfu. Visited a small village
and had a snack at the Golden Fox Restaurant
that overlooked the sea.

Diane escorted 26 guests on a mountain bike tour.
Good thing Paul was not there, he would have past
out from the heat. It hit over a humid 104 degrees.
The route was approx 20km which is about 12 miles.
Diane enjoyed herself. All the bike riding Diane did
in Phoenix before our trip to Europe paid off.

Shops open 5pm to 6pm

Italian Cities

2007, July 10
Day At Sea
Shops Open 9am - 9pm
Very boring day. This sailing is only 1/2 full. You can only
clean and straighten so much.

2007, July 11
Civitaveccia, Italy (Rome)
Escorted independent tours to Rome. Basically it's just a
round trip bus transfer between Civitaveccia and Rome. It's
about 1 1/2 - 2 hours each way. There was a guide on the
bus but then we were free in town. We started at the
Piazza del Popolo. This is where the twin churches are
located. Then onto the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain,
Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Jewish Sinagoga, Piazza Venezia,
and the Roman Forum. It was a real power sight-seeing
day. We ran out of time to actually go to the Coliseum
although we walked by. Next time we're planning on going
to Vatican City and the Coliseum.
We did manage a great piece of mushroom pizza. Best ever.
Then Serenity sailed at 9pm. Shops open 9p - 11p.

2007, July 12
Livorno, Italy
Escorted tours today - "Florence, All The Sights"
It was 1 1/2 hour transfer from the ship at dock in
Livorno to Florence. We started at the Chiesa di
Santa Croce (Sacred Cross Church). This Basilica houses
the tombs of Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Dante and Galileo.
Then we continued onto the Uffizi Gallery where we saw the
works of Leonardo da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Bernini plus
countless others. Many we're not familiar with but
beautiful just the same. Then to the Piazza della Signoria
where the statue of David originally stood. It's now been
moved indoors to the Galleria dell' Academia. There were
many other amazing sculptures there though. The tour
included a nice Italian lunch at Hotel Helavita.
Afterwards we went to the Galleria dell' Academia where
the originally David stands. It's absolutely amazing to see
in person. The copies of it and pictures cannot portray it's
beauty. There were many other Michaelangelo statues
there which were very interesting - how he could see the
figure in the marble. Our final stop was Il Duomo which is
one of the world's largest churches. The dome has a 3-D
effect which is very interesting.
Overall Florence was a pretty city with interesting
neighborhoods. We'd love to go back there and spend
more time some day.
The only draw-back on the day was escorting the tours.
It specifies in the description that the excursion involves
substantial walking for 3 hours. That however does not
dissuade guests with serious walking difficulties from
signing up. It's very frustrating and almost impossible to
keep the group together. In addition these cities are
packed with tourists and of course the summer days are hot.

2007, July 13
Monte Carlo, Monaco
A true day off. The ship was docked in Monte Carlo so we
took the shuttle bus up to the Grand Casino. Near the casino
we found a movie theatre where we thought we'd try to catch
a movie - unfortunately they were all dubbed in French.
From there we just walked along the beaches and through a beautiful
Japanese Garden. That night at dusk we walked around the
marina and admired all the beautiful yachts. We really
enjoyed not escorting and not working for a day.

2007, July 14
Toulon, France
Today is an disembarkation/embarkation day for guests.
We did "embarks" from 11:45am to 4:30pm. Just
escorting guests to the restaurant and to their stateroom.
Then we were free for a little while. We just walked
around Toulon, did a little shopping and found a good
internet cafe. Then at 7:45pm we had the guest
safety drill and then to work from 9:00pm to 11:00pm.
Shops were a lot busier with a full manifest of guests.

2007, July 15
Monte Carlo, Monaco
Serenity is anchored off Monte Carlo. We had IPM so
had to stay on the ship all day. Slept in late then went into
the shops to do some price changes. At night went with
Kay (fellow shoppie) to see "Amazing Grace" in the
Hollywood Theatre (one of the venues we have access to).

Italian Cities

2007 July 1-3
Docked in Venice, Italy. On the 1st we just took a water taxi into
town and walked around on our own. No amount of pictures
can do it justice. Everything is so grand, it's almost impossible
to take in. We just kept walking around the streets and alley-ways,
passing over many canals and watching all the gondolas.
Paul stopped for a piece of real Italian pizza, Diane opted for
fresh fruit at an open market. Walked over the famous Rialto
Bridge which passes over the Grand Canal.

In the evening we escorted a tour which was an evening
cruise around the canals by gondola. On our tour was an 87
year old guest (Arline) who could barely walk. We managed
to get her off the very turbulent water-taxi, walk ~ 200 yards
up and down steps to the gondolas, and then lower her
into a gondola. The gondolier was not happy about it and
kept giving us dirty looks - typical Italian. It was a beautiful
experience except Paul sat with Arline and Diane sat alone.
Maybe we'll have better luck next time.

On the 2nd we had IPM so had to stay on-board. Nice
quiet day, had 1 hour training and did a little work in the shops.

On the 3rd we escorted the "Introduction to Venice" tour.
This included a tour of the Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace)
which included paintings by many Venetian great artists.
We all went through the Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs)
which was very eerie. It was a bridge connecting the palace
to the prison, and it's said you could hear the sighs of the
prisoners. It's one of those places where you swear you can
feel a presense. We also toured the Basilica di San Marco
(St. Mark's Cathedral). After that a day-time gondola ride.
It was very interesting going onto the grand canl in gondola
this time. Lastly we we went to a Murano glass factory.
While everything was very pretty is was still basically a
sales opportunity.
Then shops open 5p - 11p.

2007 July 04 "Independence Day"
Day at Sea. While this is Independence Day for the U.S.,
there are maybe 20 crew members on board that are
U.S. citizens. We worked 9am - 9pm. After work changed
into formal-wear (it was a formal evening on-board) and went to
one of the shows "My Favorite Things" with music from
Rogers and Hammerstein. The show didn't start until
about 10:45pm. After the show (about 12 midnight) we went
to the crew party but had missed out on all the hamburgers
and hot dogs because everyone else had eaten everything.
Oh well. We also get to celebrate every other nationalities.
holidays.

2007 July 05
Docked in Dubrovnik, Croatia
Today started with a crew drill. We never know if it's to muster
stations or to emergency stations. Anyway, they evacuated the
entire ship of crew. Then lifeboat stations 9 & 10 which
included Diane had to board one of the lifeboats. It will hold
140 souls. In rough seas that could be tough. Diane held
back to get on at the last minute - smart thinking. Then the
Captain of the ship came out for a little pep talk. Life on-board
is really very interesting.

Afterwards, took a bus-ride shuttle into town this time. There are
many internet cafe's there so Paul spent time on the internet,
Diane walked around the side streets. It was very crowded with
tourists (like us) by the time we got there. We'll do "the wall"
next time.
Serenity sailed at 6p, shops open 6p-11p.

2007, JULY 06
At Sea
We were supposed to be at work at 9am. At 9am the phone
rang and the manager said "are you planning on joining us -"
we were sound asleep. With an inside crew quarter you
never know what time it was. Anyway, both alarm clocks
failed us.

Shops open 9am - 9pm. After work had a delightful drink
in Palm Court with Hong and Canh Nguyen from Viet-Nam.
They experienced the exodus of Viet-Nam after the war.
Now they own an extremely nice restaurant "Lotus" in
Vernon, CT. We're looking forward to a visit there some day.

2007, July 07
Anchored off Taormina. After oversleeping work the day before
we decided to sleep in. Enjoyed a day off in the sun and on-board.

2007, July 08
Anchored at Sorrento, Italy
Both Paul and Diane escorted tours from Sorrento where we
took a hydrofoil to the Isle of Capri. First the tour took us to
Anacapri (which is upper Capri) where we enjoyed the
Villa San Michele museum and gardens. Diane in particular
really enjoyed the peacefulness and coolness of the gardens.
Then on to Capri Town. Very expensive shopping.....Valentino,
Yves St Laurent, etc. The town was so crowded Paul and
Diane could not find each other for lunch. Also enjoyed
Augustus Gardens. In the evening, went back on shore and
walked around the shops. Bought a pashmina (scarf)for €1.5.
What a buy. Then back to the ship and to the "O-Bar" (Officers Bar)
for a little on-board socializing. A great day.

2007, July 09
IPM. Slept until noon.
We're becoming shoppies.
Day off. Laundry......that sort of thing.
Shops open from 5p - 11p.

Til we update again...........

Italian Riviera Continued

25 June 2007
Day At Sea. This is a good day for the guests, they just get
to relax on-board. For us it's an all day work day. Plus there
was a "crew sale" from 9:30p - 11:30p that night. It's held for
crew only in the crew quarters. Some of the products that
don't sell well to the Crystal guests are very popular with the
crew - Fossil/DKNY watches, Guess bags, that sort of thing.
Then we had to pack everything up. It was a long day!
9am - 9pm plus 9:30p - 11:30p

26 June 2007
Taormina (Sicily), Italy
The Serenity was anchored outside the port of Nexos. After
tendering into the port we both escorted tours - "Scenic
Taormina". While Taormina is very scenic this was not our
best escorting experience. It was 45 celcius (113 fahrenheit)
which makes for grumpy guests. In addition, there were
forest fires in the area so the air was smokey and very hazy.
Also, the Sicilian guides were not very enthusiastic. Maybe
the heat and haze got to them too. We are looking forward to
going back and touring independently. We also need to do
a tour of Mt. Etna - a nearby active volcano. We return 4 more
times this summer so will do more then. Shops open from
5P - 11P but we had to go in at 4p to re-stock after the crew
sale. These last couple of days have actually seemed like work.

27 June 2007
Another Day At Sea
Shops open 9am - 9pm
After work, it was still light out. The ship was hardly moving.
It was so peaceful. Very nice way to relax after a long day.

28 June 2007
Corfu, Greece
Docked in Corfu. Today escorted a scenic tour. It was a
great relaxing day. The tour was a 3 hour bus ride around
the island. The streets are so narrow there is no more than a
few inches on either side of the bus. There are stop lights it
seems in the middle of nowhere, but they control the traffic
because it's just 1 lane going through each village. Most of the
island is comprised of little villages that face the interior of the
island because it protected them from pirates.
The colors of the water are literally turquoise. Stopped
at the Golden Fox for a traditional Greek snack and a folkloric
show. Shops open again at 5p - 11p. After work the
phototographers (photogs) sponsored a "Black and White" party.
Everyone dressed in black and white and they took black and white
pictures. We didn't pose for a personal one but we took one
of all the shoppies. It will be nice to look back at someday.

29 June 2007
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Anchored off the "Walled City of Dubrovnik". This is a perfect
intact medieval town on the Adriatic coast. Luckily the town was
not destroyed during the homeland wars in the early '90s. There
is evidence of holes from shellings and bullets but most of
the structures were basically unharmed. Several of the red
roofs have been replaced but the damage was minimal
compared to what it might have been. The conflict gave
Croatia independence from what was then Yugoslavia and
freeing them from communism. There are many beautiful
monasteries , we visited the Franciscan and the Dominican.
We escorted tours again - the histroy is amazing. We also took
a bus ride outside of town to be able to look back at the city as
a whole. One of the highlights was a performance by Lindjo.
Their traditional program included costumes, songs and
dances from various Croation provinces.
Then back to work 5P - 11P

30 June 2007
Day At Sea
Shops open 9am - 9pm
As a part of crew activities, we had Saturday brunch today.
The food was "better" than the normal crew mess. We
enjoyed waffles with ice cream, and eggs benedict of sorts.
Normally our choices are limited to starch served with grease,
or grease served with starch. The healthy options are very
limited. Sometimes we get leftovers from the guest buffet
but timing is everything and the food gets picked over
pretty quickly.

Til' next time.......

Italian Riviera

20June07
Civitavecchia, Italy is the port gateway to Rome.
We've heard that Rome is a beautiful city.
We received a huge delivery that day so spent the entire time
in the bottom of the ship, receiving, inventory, pricing and
stocking.
We've had it easy so far with so many days in port.
This was our first day of really hard work. Then the shops
were open that night from 9P - 11P.
We hope you feel sorry for us. :-)

21June07
Livorno, Italy
Livorno is a huge industrial shipping port, so the views from
the ship were not scenic. We didn't do any tours, we just took
a shuttle into town. We came across a farmers market with
fruits, vegetables, and lots of fresh fish and chicken
(still with their heads).
Just enjoyed walking around, taking in the local atmosphere.
Returned to the ship to stock shops with inventory from
yesterdays delivery. Shops open from 9P - 11P.

22June07
Portofino, Italy
We were really excited about visiting here to see how it
compared to the Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando.
The day started with "Crystal Basics" training - covering
how to interface with guests on a 6-star cruise ship.
The ship was anchored so we tendered into town.
As we arrived we could see the houses built into the
mountains all with the different colored facades, it looked
like a picture postcard. The tender docked right in the
middle of town - we felt like we were right back at Universal
Studios. While exploring town we found some steps
leading up the mountain. We don't know how many there
were but we made it all the way to the top. More fabulous
views. We found a road for the walk down and passed the
Splendida Hotel which is one of the most expensive in Europe.
Talk about 6-star!!!! Then worked 5P - 11P.
After work went to a "Midsommer Party" That's not
misspelled, it's a Scandinavian tradition. It was on
deck 5 aft which was nice because we were outside.
The crew bar where most parties are is incredibly small
and smokey. After 2 1/2 weeks on the ship we're
starting to get to know some more people.

23June07
Monte Carlo, Monaco
We both signed up to escort tours. As their was only 1 bus
for each all day tour, we had to split up and go different
directions. Diane went to Eze a medieval village, very
old and scenic, then on to Nice. What a great place to walk
around and look at all the different shops and architecture.
Lunch was at a 5-star hotel called Hotel Negreso right
on the Mediterranean Sea. Then onto the Rock of Monaco.
After several escalators and elevators I arrived at Monaco's
Old Quarter to view the Prince's Palace. Didn't get much
time there so will go back another time. The final stop was
at the Grand Casino. It is is hard to describe it's
grandeur and unfornately I couldn't take any pictures inside.
Paul went to Cannes, we had been there about 20 years
ago and it hasn't changed. I walked along the waterfront
and observed the topless bathing - whoo. There were
many multi-million dollar yachts in port. Then to Grasse to
a perfume factory called Fragonard. Learned how perfume
and other toiletry items are made. After seeing the process
it's understandable while perfumes are expensive. Tested
a number of perfumes, after a while they all smelled the same.
Lunch at a remote small hotel restaurant surrounded by trees
and enjoyed a french lunch. Then proceeded to
St-Paul-de-Vance which is a medieval village. Then back
to the ship.
As soon as we got back to the ship we changed real
fast and went out to dinner on-shore with the other
shoppies. Ate at Fusion's a type of Japanese restaurant.
Then walked around the port and decided which yacht
we wanted to own. Many have their own helicopter pads.
Ship docked overnight in Monte Carlo.

24June07
MonteCarlo, Monaco
IPM (in-port manning) today. Stayed on the ship and worked
in the shops changing displays. Shops open from
5p - 11P. Had a piece of pizza at the crew bar afterward.
It was a relaxing day.

Seperate Note:
Internet on the ship is very expensive. We'll be sending
more pictures as soon as we can find a more affordable
internet cafe in port.

Til' we write again..........

Ancient Ruins

16 June 2007
Docked in Kusadasi, Turkey from 8am - 12m
yeah!!!!!!!!!!....stores closed all day.
Escorted tours to House of Mary where it is said that the
Virgin Mary spent her final days. Today it's a religous shrine
that the many Pope's have visited. Also visited St. John's
Basilica, one of the churches of Asia Minor. Had a
Countryside Lunch at a turkish rug wholesaler. Learned
about the handmade production of rugs and how they get
their silk. Of course we had the opportunity to buy one but
decided not to. The big destination of the day was Ephesus.
This is are huge ruins which are really beyond description.
Over the years there have been 6 Ephesus cities because of
retreating sea. The Ephesus we visited was the 3rd. The
ruins included a huge theatre that seated 25,000 people, a
library, many temples, a bordelo, bath house, public toilet,
columns, and statues. That night stayed on-board, caught a
movie in the Hollywood theatre and crashed.

17 June 2007
Docked in Mykonos, Greece from 8am - 5pm
Escorted tours to the Sacred Island of Delos, which is an one of
the Cyclades Islands. After 1/2 hour ferry ride toured ruins from
from 7th century B.C. to the 3rd century A.D. The statues that
have been excavated were beautiful. It gives you a new
appreciation for Greek art and architecture.
Stores open from 5pm - 11pm.

18 June 2007
At Sea - stores open from 9am - 9pm. It's a very long day!
Since we've been closed most of this cruise because we've
been in port everyday we were very busy and the day went
pretty quickly. At least we had a break for environmental
and first aid training. Went to "Curtain Call" production show
in Galaxy Theatre at night - the productions are all really good.

19 June 2007
Anchored in Sorrento, Italy
Today we are IPM (in-port manning) so had to stay on the ship.
Also, crew safety drill this morning. Since staying on board,
worked in stores to get ready for big delivery tomorrow.
However, the view from the ship was breath-taking. City is built
on huge cliffs. We'll be returning again this summer, we'll be
able to go ashore then. Working tonight 6pm - 11pm.

Til we write again!!!!!

Saturday, June 16, 2007

Mediterranean Jewels

11June
Docked in Kusadasi, Turkey from 8am to 11pm. Because
of customs laws, time in port the shops are closed so we
normally do not have to work. With our itinerary this summer,
we might only be working about 30 to 35 hours per week.
Kusadasi is a relatively modern town with few relics.
The streets are filled with shops and more shops.
Every time you go by a shop the vendors block your way.
Just imagine hundreds of shops with all the vendors lined up.
It's pretty crazy.
After walking around the bazaars we found a free internet
connection by Burger King of all places. Later when we returned
to the ship we went to a movie on board and then went to a
show featuring Jon Courtenay a comedian and pianist.
It was a very good show.

12 June
Docked in Mykonos, Greece from 8am to 5pm.
Mykonos is a beautiful quiet village on the Aegean Sea.
The buildings are white-washed with blue trim (the colors
of the Greek flag). Had lunch (crepes and Greek coffee) at
the Veranda Cafe overlooking the sea, yachts and windmills.
As we learn about live on-board we found out that at certain
times they bring down leftover food from the guest lido buffet to
the crew mess. Lots of ins and outs to learn.
That evening worked from 5pm until 11pm while the ship
was sailing to our next port Piraeus. Two of the "shoppies"
were leaving for home the next day, so joined them for a
farewell, first in the "O-Bar" (officers bar), then afterwards in
the crew bar.

13 June
Docked at Piraeus at 1am. We had IPM (in-port manning)
that day so we were unable to leave the ship. On a
rotating basis 25% of the crew has to stay on-board for
emergencies. Piraeus is the port gateway to Athens.
This was disembarkation/embarkation day for guests.
We also had duty to escort arriving guests to their
staterooms for 4 hours in the afternoon. The Serenity
sailed at midnight - shops closed all night.

14 June
Anchored at Navplion, Greece. Navplion is a relaxed
town with a lot of parks, picturesque streets and outdoor
cafes. Above the town is the Palamidi Fortress. It's about
1000 steps to the top, and just as many coming down.
This afternoon we spent some of our time in the store room
keeping current on the inventory and making sure everything
is organized. Then in the shops again from 5p-11p.

15 June
Anchored off Santorini, Greece
Escorted tours today - Panoramas of Santorini .
We helped as crew to escort tours today. While we
were on the same tour, we were escorting on
different buses - but we were still able to connect
up at all the stops. Stopped at the Monastery of the
Prophet Elijah which is the highest point on Santorini.
The views were unbelievable. There was a rising fog,
part of the island was shrouded in the mist. Then
continued to the town of Oia (pronounced ee-ah).
Another village hanging on a cliff. It is amazing.
Every corner you turn there's another beautiful view.
From there we went to the Antoniou Winery for lunch of
some traditional Greek dishes. Especially good was a
mashed white eggplant grown on the island, a tomato
salad with "santorinis" which are small local tomatoes,
and of course the baklava for dessert. After arriving
back in Fira decided to walk the 589 steps down to the
tenders again. There were 4 ships in port and there was
a 2 hour wait to take the cable-car. No thanks!
Saw comedian in the Galaxy Theater then worked
from 10pm to midnight.

Til next time............

We Finally Arrived On The Ship

June 6, 2007 - To arrive at the ship we flew to Venice-Marco Polo
airport arriving at the ship at 10pm. Security had to help us up the
gangway which was steps with our 50 pound bags (we packed too
much). Our manager, Matt, met us and escorted us to our plush
10 x 8 cabin. It includes bunk-beds, desk, TV, small closet with
drawers and a very small bathroom. At least ours has carpet
(many cruise lines don't for the crew). There's a crew bar,
laundry, crew gym and crew mess. Unpacking was fun, we kept
running into each other and got only 4 hours of sleep.

June 7, 2007 - On our 1st full day we took a tour of the ship and
attended a safety briefing. It's all pretty overwhelming but we
know if a few weeks time it will be no big deal. Then to work at
3-11pm that day. Paul will be responsible for the men's shop
and Diane for the logo shop plus sundries. The other shop
assistants (shoppies as we're called) are from Germany,
England, South Africa, Scotland, New Zealand and the U.S.

June 8, 2007 - Full day sailing the Adriatic & Mediterranean
Seas. Work that day was from 9am to 9pm. More safety training
and another tour of the ship. After work changed into our
formal clothes (evening gown and tux) to see the "Million
Dollar Musicals" production show which was excellent.

June 9, 2007 - Shops open from 9am - 12n before our
arrival in Santorini, Greece. Rode the cable car up the
mountain to the town of Fira. Many narrow streets with
cobblestone pavement all lined with shops. The town is almost
vertical making the houses look like they climb on the back of the
other. Walked around the town, enjoyed a greek pastry, then
returned to the pier by walking down 588 steps, which were
uneven and made of rock. It was also hard to manuveur because
donkeys that take tourists up and down the steps have the
right-of-way.

June 10, 2007 - Arrived early in Rhodes, Greece. Attended a
coffee with the Captain for new crew - where we were able to
meet a lot of the officers. Then to shore to walk-around the
city of Rhodes. Architectures include Hellenistic, Byzantine,
Medieval and Turkish. We then went back to the ship to get
ready for work, shops open from 5pm to 11pm.

What a life......someone has to do it.......

Arrival In England

30May07 - 02JUN07

Arrived in Bristol, England after a 24 hour adventure between flights, layovers,
bus trips and taxi rides. The best part was getting upgraded to business class on
the flight from Chicago to London.

Had our first training session with Harding Brothers (the company we work for)
about working on the Crystal Serenity. The attention on guest service is
definitely more than on other cruise lines.

We walked around Bristol (enjoying the 68 degree weather) where we visited the
SS Britain which was a steel hull ship built in the 1840's. We also visited
Cardiff, Wales. There we saw a medieval castle built in the 900's. The town was
crazy because there was a football match (soccer) between the Czech Republic
and Wales. Fans from both sides, in their colors, filled the pubs and spilled into the streets.

We'll update next week when we get on the ship.

Watch Our Cruise Ship In Real Time

Go to http://crystalcruises.com/home.aspx

Once on the site, highlight "Tour The Ships" and click on "Crystal Serenity".

When the next page comes up, go to the right side under the heading
"Ship Details - Live Ship Views.

You then can click on Bridge, Port, Starboard and Computer Room Views.

The views are real time and refresh every minute. On the top of the view
it tells you where the sip is, ships time(24hr clock) and what day it is.

Every once in a while we may show up in the computer room. We will let you
know what time to look for us.

Also, if you want to view our itinerary just go to the left side of the page your on
and click on "Find A Cruise".

On the top right of the page that comes up, put the month and year you want to see
along with the ship (Serenity).

Hit "Find" and the sailings for that month will come up. Just click on itinerary to
see where we will be going.

If you have any problems feel free to comment here.

Thanks for coming.

Welcome To Our Blog

We are finally leaving for our new adventure. When we got to Phoenix AZ we thought it would be a few weeks, but it turned out to be 5 weeks. We were able to sell our RV and truck so we don't have to worry about putting them in storage.

We will be in Bristol England, 2hrs west of London, from May 31 until June 6. Then we're flying to Venice Italy to join Crystal Cruise Lines ship called the "Serenity" where we will be gift shop sales associates.

That's it for now. We will be posting messages and will email you when we do this. Also, we will be emailing pictures of our travels. Take care everyone....
